Pitfall No. 1 to avoid in order to take office successfully: jumping into action too quickly.

When you take on a new role, you may be tempted to immediately show your added value, to show that you are effective, that you understand the subject, etc. This can, logically, lead you to want to do something. However, the first lesson in taking up a successful position is to Start by watching. Observe, understand, ask, meet people, ask them to talk about their job.Don't fall into the trap of jumping into action too quickly![

Pitfall No. 2 to avoid in order to succeed in taking office: wanting to fend for yourself.

Those who fail to take office are very often those who don't think about asking for help, who don't think of looking for information directly by asking questions. They say to themselves: “No, I don't want to disturb” or “I don't want to look like someone who doesn't know”...Don't think that asking questions is a sign of weakness or incompetence..On the contrary! We will thank you for that.

Pitfall No. 3 to avoid in order to succeed in taking office: thinking that you understand everything right away.

Entering a new job, a new profession or taking on a new function is like discover a new culture, a new country.Keep in mind that the codes, rules, ways of doing or acting may not be exactly the same as what you are used to. Act in the same way as when you arrive in a new country: discover, decode what is important to this group or team. Moreover, even if you were already part of the team, for example taking on the role of manager, it's a big difference!Take some time to observe this new culture and never say to yourself, “I already know.”

Pitfall No. 4 to avoid in order to succeed in taking office: forgetting to build relationships with your environment

The risk when taking office is to let very quickly be invaded by a whole bunch of files, to isolate yourself and not to think about building relationships with the people around you. You arrive in a new profession, often even in a new business. You must therefore understand, of course, the people you are working with directly, the members of your team, your boss, etc. but you also need to understand how the teams around you work. So don't get carried away by the action, but go and build relationships in the halls, at the coffee machine. Understand who the people who share your daily life are, so you can work better with them.

Identify the roles of each person to perform better

Pitfall No. 5 to avoid in order to succeed in taking office: not checking what is expected of you.

Ask your boss clearly after a few months what your priorities are. What are you expecting? You signed up for a job that looked like this on paper but you will discover the details, the subtleties, what you know how to do and what you don't do well.Remember to double-check what is expected of you in this function.

Pitfall No. 6 to avoid in order to succeed in taking office: not building a strategic agenda.

Write down the most important tasks you need to do every day, every week. Put on Rendezvous with yourself for substantive tasks that you need to think about. Manage your agenda really in a very disciplined way.
